Weekend Getaways
WEEKEND GETAWAYS FOR COUPLES
Start by heading straight for the City of Albany, a place so different to most, the first West Australian European settlement. Albany is a place of many striking contrasts, beauty and coastlines. If you are driving from Perth, allow 4 to 5 hours, head south along the Albany Highway. En route you will encounter pastoral landscapes, mountain ranges, some of the States finest wineries.
Once you arrive in Albany and drive down the main arterial road, York Street, names like Prince Albert, Darwin, Lawson, Tim Winton, have all walked the city’s main thoroughfare or contributed in one way or another, to its colourful history. So much of the historic past has been fully restored and preserved for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.
There are any number of fascinating historical attractions in and around the City, the first consecrated church in West Australia “St. John’s” is located in York Street. If you are into history there is one experience you really will enjoy, “Old Farm Strawberry Hill” a sobering reminder of times past, definitely not to be missed.
York Street will lead you to Princess Royal Harbour and King George Sound which literally surround Albany. At the end of the Frenchman’s Bay peninsula you will discover the old whaling station, which again is all part of the colourful history of Albany. The whaling station and the adjoining wild life park is also worth a visit. On the other hand you may be more content with the breathtaking views from Mount Clarence and Mount Melville. At the summit of Mt Clarence is the fantastic bronze memorial to the Anzacs, depicting the agony of war, an Australian horseman helping a fallen New Zealand comrade, it is very moving and touches the hearts of every Australian.
What will be become very clear is that Albany’s attractions are certainly diverse enough to cater for most. It’s a great place to enjoy a relaxing weekend break, whether it’s wining and dining in the many restaurants, or exploring the local galleries and craft shops, or enjoying a conducted walking tour by J.J’s around the city and learning about its colourful past, you won’t be bored.
The impressive ship on the Albany harbour foreshore catches most by surprise; it is in fact a full scale replica of the Brig Amity - the ship that brought the first settlers and convicts to Albany in 1826. It is certainly worthy of a mooch around. Metres away are the convict built Old Gaol, which is today an interesting museum- and by the way the ghosts are friendly! The five minute drive out of the City takes you to Middleton Beach, there are plenty of opportunities to pull off the road and enjoy the beautiful seascape including King George Sound, Michaelmas and Breaksea Islands.
Wait a moment we are not finished yet; Bushwalking, visiting the local national parks, whale watching or enjoying a pint in the ‘Earl of Spencer’ the state’s oldest pub, its all part of the experience. It is a beautiful spot to get a way and unwind. Incidentally, six kilometres from the town centre is the Albany Wind Farm, one of Australia’s biggest with twelve of the largest wind turbines in the Southern Hemisphere. So, maybe two days won’t be long enough!
